The definitive book on Pol Pot's Cambodia by Nate Thayer, the only Western journalist to interview him in 18 years. I have been researching and writing my book Sympathy for the Devil: A Journalist's Memoir from Inside Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge for 15 years. For 25 years, I have conducted original reporting to compile what is now an 800 page, rough, unedited manuscript. I have accumulated millions of words of notes, hundreds of hours of audio and … [More...] ■

Hi Nate- I’ve been following your work for years with great interest and admiration, and I look forward to the completed book. However, when I tried to pre-order it just now, the form stated that shipping is unavailable in the US. Is this indeed so, or is it a computer glitch? How can I get a copy? Thanks- Val Schaffner

HI Nate,
I have followed your work for some time now. Very courageous and inspiring. My one question, though, is why won’t a big time publisher support this project?
You’re clearly the no. 1 authority on this subject and have a proven track record accomplished over many years. Why won’t a top publisher pay for your project? What a stingy world we live in.

Hi Nate
You won’t remember me, but I was with you very briefly in 1998. It was around the elections and a hot night, a few of us, and Michael Vickery was there too. I recall you being upset and burning $20 bills, or some such thing. You were kind enough to drive me from Battambang to Phnom Penh the following day, or soon after; my memory is hazy, unsurprisingly. We both roared with laughter after you spat out the stuff you were chewing and the window of the car was still wound down. As I said, I doubt you’d remember me.
I am guessing you have approached publishers. What was their response to your manuscript? I’d be happy to go over whatever they wrote (I’m an academic with some experience in getting published) and see if we can get your book a bit closer to publication. There are also a few publishers who don’t charge much at all, if anything, for the academic material.
Best wishes

I just came back from Cambodia few weks ago after a “holiday” with my son and my wife in a country I always wanted to visit. It turned out into something different. After seeing the beauty and majesty of the khmer empire remains I traveled outside the tourist routes and I got more and more involved in trying to understand the recent past and the gloomy present of this poor country which has been crippled by years of unbelievable suffering and went to the verge of annihilation but is still faraway from being liberated by the greedy parasites that are sucking its blood and selling the land and its resources to criminal ” business companies”. I have found your blog a source of prime rate informations on this country. Thank for your efforts and committment. I will support your project and sincerely hope that it will succeed and you may get the credits and the financial rewards you deserve. It is incredible that everyday tons of books full of bullshit are sold and no major publishing company is interested in your material.
All my best from me and my family

It is sickening to know that big names such as Ted Koppel and the ABC Network stole your work. After all it was you who risked your life and spent years in the jungle chronicling one of the greatest genocide in the human history. Hopefully you will get to publish your book soon.
